The Donald Bain Memorial Fund commemorates one of New Zealand's foremost proponents of the art of Piobaireachd. The Fund will be applied to the charitable purpose of educating the public in the musical heritage which New Zealand has, from the time of its first European settlement, shared with Scotland in the form of the classical music of the Highland Bagpipe. It will thus provide a reservoir from which money is available to assist and promote excellence in playing, teaching and appreciation of piobaireachd.
The first project to receive the support of the Fund was the 2001 Easter Piobaireachd Seminar. Murray Henderson and Greg Wilson, both former pupils of Donald Bain and now among the leading pipers and teachers in Scotland, provided 5 days advanced tuition in piobaireachd at Hastings, following the Highland Games in Easter 2001. Twenty players participated, with funding to subsidise participant contributions coming from a variety of sources, including the Donald Bain Memorial Fund.
The Donald Bain Memorial Fund will make it possible to take advantage of special opportunities in piobaireachd as they occur, such as:
